Volunteer spotlight: meet Phyllis.


Name: Phyllis Comer

What inspired you to volunteer at Feed More?: Because of the rising costs of living, I know there are a lot of families out there struggling to put food on their table, so I wanted to volunteer for an organization that helps food-insecure families. A friend of mine had suggested volunteering at Feed More.

How do you lend a helping hand at Feed More? And how long have you been doing it?: I help in the Food Bank Distribution Center sorting perishable food and stocking various items in the store. I also help with sorting and packing nonperishable food items. In addition, I help with the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) packing sessions. Lastly, I have helped with special projects like packing holiday boxes, the pop-up distribution this past winter for the partial government shutdown and special Saturday sort sessions. I have been volunteering for five and a half years.

What do you love most about volunteering at Feed More?: You get to meet and work with so many different people.

What is your favorite memory at Feed More?: I will never forget sorting, cleaning and packing the 400,000 eggs that a hatchery donated to Feed More. It was a messy job, but knowing that the agencies had access to so many eggs for the people they serve was a great feeling!

Where is the coolest place you have traveled to and/or want to travel to?: My husband and I lived in Germany for four years, and we took a trip to Obergurgl, Austria to learn how to snow ski.

When you’re not volunteering, what is your favorite thing to do in Richmond?: My husband and I enjoy exploring the various parks and gardens in Richmond.

Why should people volunteer at Feed More?: It’s a fun and rewarding experience helping a great organization!
