Feed More Brightens Holidays for Central VA Families, Here’s How You Can Help

11/26/2024
Kelsey Crews (R) receives a bag full of fresh corn from volunteer Marvin Ballou (L) at a Feed More-supported distribution at South Boston Elementary School...“There’s a need for what Feed More does. … I came once to help, and I had such a good time. I think this is the fourth time I’ve been here now. It’s amazing. I have such a great time,” says Mr. Ballou.

RICHMOND, Va. – Feed More is working hard to ensure neighbors experiencing food insecurity can enjoy wholesome meals throughout the holiday season – and they need the Central Virginia community’s help!

For many, the holidays are a special time to enjoy meals surrounded by loved ones – but for 1 in 9 Central Virginians experiencing food insecurity, it is more difficult than ever to put nourishing food on the table. While most of the neighbors Feed More helps have jobs and income, the rising cost of essentials like childcare, housing and insurance are stretching budgets to the breaking point.

While food prices have dropped from an all-time high, groceries are still 20% higher today than they were in 2021. On top of that, homeowners insurance is also up 20% over the past two years, while childcare costs are rising at nearly double the pace of overall inflation. This all leads more families to turn to their local food pantries to make ends meet – and we know that often, they face a longer road to recovery from economic hardship. In fact, during the last two years, Feed More has seen a 22% increase in need, and is back to pandemic-level high requests for food assistance.

That’s why Feed More is asking the Central Virginia community to help spread joy this holiday season by donating food, funds and/or time to support our neighbors in their time of need.

Here are some easy ways you can help:

  • Donate food. Feed More’s Kroger Donation Center, located at 8020 Villa Park Drive, is accepting donations Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dropping off after-hours or over the weekend? Nonperishable goods can be dropped off any time at the blue donation bins in front of our Kroger Donation Center at 8020 Villa Park Drive. For a list of our most-needed items, please visit: FeedMore.org/donate-food.
    • PLEASE NOTE: Feed More’s Kroger Donation Center will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, 12/24, and will be closed on Wednesday, 12/25. Our Donation Center will reopen with its regular hours on Thursday, 12/26.
  • Donate your time. Feel good while you do some serious good by volunteering with Feed More this holiday season! Feed More’s biggest need is for Meals on Wheels delivery drivers in Richmond, Petersburg, Colonial Heights and Hopewell. For all openings, please visit: FeedMore.org/donate-time.
  • Give the gift of hope. Struggling to find that perfect give for that special someone this holiday season? If so, give the gift of health and hope in their honor by dedicating your donation! Your support will help our neighbors wrestling with food insecurity, and is sure to bring a smile to the face of your loved ones: give.FeedMore.org/dedicate.
