What is SNAP? The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, provides food benefits to low-income individuals, families and seniors to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford the nutritious food essential to health and well-being.
Who is eligible?
Several factors are used to see if an individual or family is eligible for SNAP, including citizenship and employment status, financial situation/household income and living arrangements. Use the Virginia SNAP Screener to see if you are eligible.
What documents are recommended or needed to apply?
- Identification (for everyone in the household)
- Social security numbers (for everyone in the household)
- Utility bills (gas, electric, oil, water and telephone)
- Rent receipt/agreement or mortgage statements and/or tax bill
- Proof of income (for everyone in the household)
- Medical expenses – ONLY if you are 60 and older and/or disabled
- Child day care expenses

- SNAP Fresh Match/Incentives – If available in your area, you can double your SNAP dollars at Virginia Fresh Match network partners including farmers markets, mobile markets, farm stores and community food stores.
- Museums for All – Those receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) can gain free or reduced admission to more than 1,500 museums throughout the United States simply by presenting their EBT card and a photo ID.
- Recipients of SNAP may also be eligible for Free school lunches and subsidized utilities and internet.
