Local Organizations Unite to Feed Richmond

11/20/2019

Kroger, Feed More, the Boy Scouts of America and SummitMedia have joined forces to Feed Richmond. The multi-faceted food drive will take place across the Richmond region with the goal of raising enough resources to provide 200,000 meals to central Virginians in need.

In its 13th year, Feed Richmond is one of Feed More’s largest annual food drives. This year, with the addition of new partners, Feed Richmond is expected to surpass last year’s donations, which provided close to 120,000 meals. The team behind Feed Richmond wanted to make the food drive as accessible as possible for members of the community to give back to those in need. To participate in Feed Richmond, Richmonders can choose from the following options:

  • Purchase a Feed the Hungry box at Kroger. For $7.99, Kroger shoppers can provide as many as 10 meals for a household in need. Each box is filled with in-demand, non-perishable items identified by Feed More. The boxes are located beyond the checkout area and customers should request to purchase a box when at the register.
  • Participate in Scouting for Food to Feed Richmond. Richmonders should be on the lookout for the local chapter of Boy Scouts of America’s annual Scouting for Food initiative. More than 230,000 bags will be hand-delivered on Nov. 16 by Boy Scouts from the Heart of Virginia Council to homes throughout Richmond. Households are encouraged to fill the bags with non-perishables and the Boy Scouts will pick them up on Nov. 23. The bags also can be dropped off at any Kroger store.
  • Round up at the Kroger register. Through the end of the year, customers can choose to round up their total to the nearest dollar when checking out at Kroger.
  • Donate coins at Kroger. Customers also can drop their extra change in the coin boxes at Kroger registers.

“Feed Richmond is a campaign we look forward to each year because it’s one that truly shows how much we are able to accomplish when we come together,” said Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager for Kroger Mid-Atlantic. “We are committed to ending hunger throughout central Virginia, but we know it wouldn’t be possible without the support of the entire community.”

“Feed Richmond is a great example of how small efforts can lead to big results. With so many ways to participate in Feed Richmond, we hope people will consider options that meet their ability to give,” said Doug Pick, President & CEO of Feed More. “We’re incredibly grateful to have such a passionate and involved network of community partners here in Richmond. We wouldn’t be able to feed those in need if it weren’t for campaigns like Feed Richmond, and it’s truly heartwarming to see the community support their neighbors over the course of this campaign.”

The on-site component of Feed Richmond kicks off on Nov. 21 and runs through Nov. 23. SummitMedia radio stations will have live remotes at three Kroger stores to raise awareness and excitement about Feed Richmond. The stations will be on-site from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The following Kroger locations will host the live broadcasts:

  • 96.5 WKLR Classic Rock will be at the Kroger store located at 13201 Rittenhouse Dr, Midlothian, VA 23112
  • K95 WKHK #1 For Country will be at the Kroger store located at 9351 Atlee Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116
  • 103.7 Play WURV will be at the Kroger store located at 11895 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23233

“We’re excited to have merged Scouting for Food with the Feed Richmond campaign. Whenever a decision leads to helping more people in need in our community, then it is the right decision,” said Todd Martin, deputy scout executive for the Boy Scouts of America Heart of Virginia Council. “I speak for everyone when I say we’re all thrilled to be part of this record-breaking year.”
