RICHMOND, Va. – This Thanksgiving, Kroger Mid-Atlantic has teamed up with FeedMore to cover the cost of a special Thanksgiving meal for nearly 900 seniors and homebound neighbors in FeedMore’s Meals on Wheels program. Kroger is also making the week of Thanksgiving extra special for FeedMore’s Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers by handing out fuel gift cards.
“We’re very thankful to have a partner like Kroger who is always looking for creative and meaningful ways to join us in the fight against hunger in Central Virginia,” said Tim McDermott, Chief Development Officer at FeedMore. “Our volunteers give so much to us each and every day and it’s a great feeling to be able to provide them with a little something extra this holiday season to recognize their continued commitment and dedication to our mission and most importantly, our recipients.”
On Wednesday, November 23, Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers will deliver the Thanksgiving meals to recipients on 92 routes throughout Richmond and the Tri-cities. Kroger donated the full cost of the special holiday meal, saving FeedMore nearly $3,000. The Thanksgiving meal includes roast turkey and gravy, cornbread stuffing, honey glazed carrots, green beans amandine, pumpkin pie, a whole wheat roll and cranberry sauce. For recipeints with specific dietary restrictions, the menu is adjusted to accommodate their nutritional requirements.
Additionally, to offset the cost of fuel and show thanks for their generosity, every Meals on Wheels volunteer driver during the week of Thanksgiving will receive a Kroger gift card. The average Meals on Wheels driver follows a 13-mile route that takes roughly 55 minutes to complete. Kroger will provide each driver with a $10 Kroger gift card to be redeemed at Kroger Fuel Centers.
“We are thrilled to be able to partner with FeedMore in this capacity for the second year in a row,” said Allison McGee, spokesperson for Kroger Mid-Atlantic. “We consider it a great opportunity to be able to recognize the Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers while offsetting costs for FeedMore of the Thanksgiving meal.”
Since 2014, Kroger Mid-Atlantic has donated 746,068 meals to FeedMore through a variety of initiatives, including coin box donations, icon sales, corporate donations, partnerships, perishable donations and other community events.
