Feeding the Community

Just as you prepare and pack your meals, here at Feed More we make, prepare and package meals for our clients. Apply to volunteer in our Community Kitchen!

Preparing

Position: Community Kitchen – Preparation                    

Supervisor: Site Shift Supervisor

Work Location: Bayard Community Kitchen – Feed More, Richmond, VA

Age requirement: At least 18 years of age

Time Commitment: Minimum of 50 hours annually

Shift availability: Monday – Friday

Project Summary: From preparing meals for homebound neighbors and children across our region to sorting donations Feed More has received, there is no shortage of work to be done. Community Kitchen volunteers help with food preparation and/or the packaging of meals to be distributed to those in our community.  The Kitchen serves 4,000 meals a day increasing substantially over the years.

Major Tasks: Slicing, cutting, chopping, dicing, and mixing of ingredients to be used in daily meals; make sandwiches; cleaning; etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Executive Chef and cook staff in the overall preparation of meals
  • Wash, peel, and chop vegetables and fruits; open cans and other food container; mix ingredients, etc.
  • Prepare foods, once cooked or mixed, for delivery—place into delivery containers, securing, sealing, etc. 
  • Prepare sandwich meals (slice meats and cheeses, dress sandwiches as needed and assemble sandwiches with appropriate ingredients)
  • Follow policies and procedures as defined by Feed More
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Reliable and able to follow directions
  • Must follow food safety regulations
  • Detail-oriented and comfortable with repetitive tasks
  • Must be able to stand on a concrete floor for the entire shift
  • Able to lift at least 20 lbs
  • Comfortable working in an environment kept at a constant 65F

Packaging

Position: Community Kitchen – Packaging                        

Supervisor: Site Shift Supervisor

Work Location: Bayard Community Kitchen – Feed More, Richmond, VA

Age requirement: At least 16 years of age

Time Commitment: Minimum of 50 hours annually

Shift availability: Monday – Friday

Project Summary: From preparing meals for homebound neighbors and children across our region to sorting donations Feed More has received, there is no shortage of work to be done. Major Tasks:  Portioning/plating meals, sealing and labeling food trays; assembling trays for delivery; cleaning kitchen equipment; etc.

Responsibilities:        

  • Portion food items into sectioned trays
  • Prepare sandwich meals – this may include slicing meats and cheeses, dressing sandwiches as needed and assembling sandwiches with appropriate ingredients
  • Seal and label packages for delivery  
  • Follow policies and procedures as defined by Feed More
  • Other duties as assigned
