If you’re looking for an easy, healthy way to start each day off on the right foot, look no further than your first meal of the day – breakfast! Breakfast has been called the most important meal of the day for years, and with good reason. It helps to kick start your energy and can help with alertness and concentration for the rest of the day. Breakfast literally means “breaks the fast.”
Many families rush through their morning routines in order to get out the door in time for school, work or other activities. But a good breakfast does not have to take a lot of time, a meal that includes high fiber carbs and protein is a great way to start your day and can be easy to prepare. We’ve got some ideas that are quick, healthy, affordable and fast!
Eggs
Eggs have been served on breakfast tables across the world for centuries. Packed full of protein and iron – especially in the egg whites – this breakfast staple is a classic that’s versatile, quick and absolutely delicious. Make meals ahead of time by hard boiling a dozen eggs and keeping them refrigerated throughout the week, or make a casserole that can be easily frozen. For those that like to cook in the morning, create a quick scramble full of veggies like onions, peppers, mushrooms and spinach.
Oats
Who doesn’t love oatmeal?! One of the healthiest breakfast options available, and one of the most affordable, you can’t go wrong. Adding oats into your diet has shown to help with weight loss, lower blood sugar and reduce the risk of heart disease. It’s also full of important vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. While instant is easiest, we suggest buying plain oats and adding fresh fruits as a sweetener and a little brown sugar. It’s nearly as fast and the health benefits can’t be beat!
Peanut Butter
This sweet treat doesn’t only taste good, but also contains some great health benefits. Chock full of protein and good fats, peanut butter will fill you up and help keep you full until lunch. To maximize its benefits, eat with fresh fruits. One of our favorites is spreading peanut butter on whole wheat toast, or a frozen waffle and adding sliced bananas!
Did you know that peanut butter is also one of Feed More’s most needed items? It’s a classic favorite that families in need across Central Virginia continue to enjoy. If you have an extra jar or are looking for items to donate to our Community Donation Drop-Off, peanut butter is the perfect item to give!
Yogurt with Fruit, Nuts or Whole Grain Cereal
Choose lower sugar Greek yogurts and cereal with berries and nuts for a breakfast full of protein, fiber, good fats and nutrients to get you through the morning! We know mornings can be chaotic, but taking just a few minutes to enjoy breakfast can really make a big difference in your day.
