The Federation of Virginia Food Banks is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit state association of food banks affiliated with Feeding America. The Federation supports the seven regional Virginia/Washington DC food banks in building partnerships, securing resources, sharing data, and raising awareness of food insecurity throughout the Commonwealth.

Working together as the largest hunger-relief network in the Commonwealth, Virginia’s seven regional food banks distributed 165 million pounds of food through 1,500 agency partners in 2021. Collectively, we serve approximately 1 million people on an annual basis.

The Federation of Virginia Food Banks is engaging in exciting new work to improve nutrition security and empower strong, healthy communities. We need YOU to achieve our goals.

The Nutrition Benefit Access Coordinator will advance the health equity initiatives of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks by enhancing public awareness and utilization of Federal nutrition programs.

What you’ll do:

• Grow a network of community partners who provide outreach and assistance for public nutrition programs such as SNAP, helping to increase access to these programs across the Commonwealth
• Engage partners from diverse sectors such as healthcare, local food and agriculture, senior services, and others in outreach for SNAP and other public nutrition programs
• Support the development of SNAP and WIC outreach initiatives at member food banks in alignment with the Federation’s Health Equity strategy, with particular emphasis on screening and referral partnerships w/ healthcare providers
• Create and distribute SNAP outreach materials and identify new opportunities for outreach
• Work with the Health Equity Project Manager to ensure that messaging and outreach strategies are informed by individuals with lived expertise of food insecurity and navigating public nutrition programs
• Educate community partners on the importance of SNAP and WIC in Virginia through conferences, presentations, and coalition work
• Maintain a strong understanding of the public nutrition programs including eligibility, application procedures, state and federal policies impacting the programs, and common access barriers
• Develop and provide trainings on SNAP and WIC outreach to food pantries and other community partners

• Ensure that the Federation’s outreach activities align with the goals and requirements included in Feeding America’s SNAP Outreach Program and Virginia DSS’s SNAP Outreach Plan, including data tracking and reporting
• Provide input on the planning, implementation, and evaluation of member outreach programs

Must have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in social work or social science field and/or 1+ years of experience in advocacy, public policy, human services, or community organizing
  • Individuals with lived experience of food insecurity and with navigating public assistance programs are encouraged to apply
  • Passionate about collaboration, innovation, and engagement with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to remain calm and focused, and perform duties in situations that have short deadlines. Can succeed in situations with high stress and multiple demands from various sources
  • Willingness to travel outside the office 3-5 days per month, occasional evening and weekend work
  • Flexibility required to adjust to other needs of the organization
  • Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance required
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Displays strong organizational and planning skills and an orientation to detail
  • Demonstrates self-confidence and enthusiasm
  • Possesses superior writing and communication skills that are effective with a wide range of audiences
  • Demonstrates a clear commitment to the Federation’s mission and its success
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word

This is a full-time, grant-funded position. Service beyond 3 years is dependent on new funding.
