The Federation of Virginia Food Banks is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit state association of food banks affiliated with Feeding America. The Federation supports the seven regional Virginia/Washington DC food banks in building partnerships, securing resources, sharing data, and raising awareness of food insecurity throughout the Commonwealth.

Working together as the largest hunger-relief network in the Commonwealth, Virginia’s seven regional food banks distributed 165 million pounds of food through 1,500 agency partners in 2021. Collectively, we serve approximately 1 million people on an annual basis.

The Federation’s Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations oversees partnerships and communications in support of the organization’s strategic goals. This role requires an adept and nimble communicator, and a creative fundraiser who has a zeal for cultivating relationships and a heart for anti-hunger work.

While this position is based in an office setting, there is flexibility for some telecommuting throughout the week. The individual in this position also has the opportunity to travel across the state to meet with high-level strategic partners and food bank staff and to attend meetings and conferences. The Federation of Virginia Food Banks is a small but mighty team, so the individual in this position must be highly self-directed and excited about wearing many hats as new projects and opportunities arise. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and works with support from a Communications Coordinator (to be hired).

The primary responsibilities of the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations include:

  • Develop relationships with corporations and foundations to facilitate funding and strategic support to advance the mission of the Federation and its members
  • Identify key prospects and engage in a coordinated team approach with member food banks and partners
  • Deliver data-informed insights to guide awareness campaigns, policy priorities, and fundraising
  • Represent the Federation in public communications as needed
  • Design and implement corporate sponsor recognition programs
  • Develop event opportunities to increase support for programmatic priorities
  • Ensure equitable engagement processes with food insecure communities to inform external communications and messaging

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Passionate about collaboration, innovation, and engagement with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to remain calm and focused and perform duties in situations that have short deadlines. Can succeed in situations with high stress and multiple demands from various sources
  • Willingness to travel outside the office 3-5 days per month, occasional evening and weekend work
  • Flexibility required to adjust to other needs of the organization
  • Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance required
  • At least three years of nonprofit fundraising experience, sales, and/or community outreach
  • Strong presentation, verbal and written communication skills and experience drafting fundraising solicitations, press releases, and other professional communications
  • Solid relationship-building skills and the ability to comfortably interface with C-Level Executives and support staff
  • Understanding of the needs and interests of corporate donors and association partners to develop relationships and partnerships between them and the Federation
  • Displays strong organization and planning skills and an orientation to detail
  • Demonstrates self-confidence and enthusiasm
  • Possesses superior writing and communication skills that are effective with a wide range of audiences
  • Demonstrates a clear commitment to the Federation’s mission and its success
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
