Feed More Opens South Hill Branch

11/11/2019

Feed More recently opened a new branch in South Hill, Va. that serves as a distribution center for 27 of their Agency Network members in the counties of Brunswick, Charlotte, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and the city of Emporia.

“We are thrilled to be joining the South Hill community,” said Doug Pick, President and Chief Executive Officer of Feed More. “This long awaited expansion has allowed us to further extend our reach and better serve the southern region of our service area, and the more than 18,000 food-insecure residents that live there. Our hope is that our local agencies will now be able to better support the community with more product and increased amounts of produce.”

With food insecurity rates topping 15 percent in this region, Feed More is continuing to work on better and more efficient ways to help these more rural and vulnerable communities. The South Hill Branch of Feed More is the biggest effort to date.

The distribution center stands at about 12,000 square feet and will allow Feed More to increase their total distribution capacity by 40 percent. Feed More also plans to grow their distribution capabilities in the southern region from 2.5 million pounds of food to between 3.5 – 4 million pounds annually. The food housed in the warehouse includes many of the same items Feed More has at their Food Bank Distribution Center on their main Richmond campus, but will be based specifically on the needs of those in that area, including more fresh produce like milk, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables.

“Having Feed More in the South Hill Community means less families will go hungry,” said Emmett Williams, owner of Williams Enterprises in South Hill. “We’re excited about the new addition to our community and the new programs available. Local residents will have better access to nutritious meals more often.”
